Rivers are Love

“I love you, because all the loves in the world are like different rivers flowing into the same lake where they meet and are transformed into a single love that becomes rain and blesses the earth.” - Paulo Coelho

As a child I was already fascinated a lot by rivers. This started with the Rhine: coming from the Swiss Alps, crossing borders easily and ending in the Dutch North sea. I couldn’t imagine the water all the way from the Alps ended up in The Netherlands. With geographical classes in primary school this love for rivers grew, by getting to know about the Amazon, the Nile and eventually the Ganges river. When I finally visited Varanasi, a dream came true. Oh, how this place changed my life.

And now I see; rivers are like pure love. They don’t care about boundaries, they are flowing constantly, bright and clear in the source. It is only along the way that they become polluted and dirty. Like our love has to endure certain pain and hardships throughout life.

Our rivers matter. We should understand that they are precious, stop polluting them and take out the trash. Even though it was thrown in by others. And so is love. Our love deserves to be taken care of. We should understand we need to nourish it, clear past hurts and wounds - take the trash out. Even though it was caused by certain experiences or by others.

It is only when we realize that we are love, we are the river, we can truly start taking care of it.
